Copy-editing
Proofreading is no substitute for thorough copy-editing, which involves pulling all the copy together and making sure it reads consistently and correctly: putting the reader first! Although including basic proofreading, its main focus is broader in scope:
- Checking and correcting obvious errors in spelling and grammar
- Eliminating errors of fact as far as the brief allows
- Checking the progression of ideas or subjects is logical and reads clearly
- Checking that headings, subheadings and their hierarchy works - likewise for tables and diagrams
- Checking references are complete and cross-references are correct
- Imposing consistency of spelling, capitalization, abbreviations etc, in accordance with a house style (whether exisitng or to be created)
- Coding the text for the typesetter (and proofreader)
- Providing a communication link between the writer, designer, typesetter, proofreader, project editor - whoever may be involved!
