Why use a copy-editor?

Why

"Drawing on my fine command of the English language, I said nothing."

Robert Benchley

A good copy-editor intervenes only when absolutely necessary and does not rewrite your text.

Here are some other misconceptions about copy-editing:

  • I wrote it, so I should know what I'm trying to say
  • My designer looks after this
  • This is a specialist subject and I know what I'm doing!
  • My readers wouldn't notice
  • It sounds expensive

I wrote it, so I should know what I'm trying to say
No doubt, but in reality it is extremely difficult to separate yourself from what you have written to be able to objectively appraise it. And if it is technically correct, is it communicating exactly what you intended to the reader?

My designer looks after this
Designers work with the text given to them - they do not edit the text. And well-designed copy does not necessarily mean well-read or understood copy! Page layout that has been structured at the copy-editing stage can save a lot of headaches at the design stage, so style and substance can and do compliment each other.

This is a specialist subject and I know what I'm doing!
Absolutely. Why not free yourself to concentrate on the elements that matter to you - to do what you do best - and leave the copy-editing to a professional? We should think of expense in terms of time as well as cost.

My readers wouldn't notice
How do you know? Can you be certain that what you write flows easily and logically for the reader? Would you know if you lost a client because of badly-worded copy?

It sounds expensive
Even in better times of course we are all careful. But proficient, concise text is copy that delivers your message and can improve your standing and revenue: more relevant now than ever.
